Memorial Day Weekend, Sun Valley Style😎

What do your plans hold this holiday weekend?  Martha & Katherine share some fun ideas whether it's sunny, rainy or snowy.

We don't know about you, but the summer fever has hit at both of our houses!  The kids are excited to get out of school for the summer and enjoy all that summer brings in Sun Valley, Idaho.  We are excited for warmer, longer days and a change of pace. From All-Star Baseball, Mountain Adventure Tours Camps, Leroy's Ice Cream, Camping in the Sawtooth Mountains, and everything else in-between, we are ready for summer!

Memorial Day is typically the kick off to the summer season but in Sun Valley, Idaho it doesn't always feel like summer.  But...you know what they say, if you don't like the summer weather in the mountains, just wait 5 minutes!  It seems like we will have all the weather this weekend, so we are both planning on some indoor and outdoor activities...here are a few of our favorites!

1. Opening Weekend for Redfish Lake Lodge + Memorial Day Weekend Fun Run

Redfish Lake Lodge & Marina open this weekend!  The anchor for fun in the Sawtooth Mountains, Redfish Lodge is a favorite summer destination.  While the lodging is booked up for the weekend, plan a day trip to enjoy the lake, the restaurant & live music.  This weekend they are hosting their annual Memorial Day Weekend Run.   Come out to cheer on the runners (including Katherine and her kids) racing distances of Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run!    If you make the beautiful drive north over Galena pass to the Stanley, Idaho basin, don't miss having breakfast at the local's favorite, The Stanley Baking Co.   If the weather is cold as predicted, go exploring to some of the area hot springs to warm up!  There are tons of great hikes in the Stanley area, Sawtooth Lake is one of Martha's favorites.

2. Golf, Golf, Golf!

There is a lot of great golf in Sun Valley, Idaho and this is a great weekend to get warmed up for the summer golf season.

The Sun Valley Resort has a total of 45 holes between the Trail Creek, White Clouds & Elkhorn Courses.  Check their website for availability.  If you want to take the whole family, they have an 18-hole putting course right outside the Sun Valley Club, which is a great spot for lunch too.

Bigwood Golf Course is a 9-hole course just on the north end of Ketchum, Idaho that offers amazing views and great course if you only want to play 9 before you move on to the next activity.

3.  Mountain Bike season has arrived!

With all of the recent rain in early May, the trails are tacky and it great condition.  If you are new to mountain biking, don't hesitate to get a guide to take you out and show you the trails.  Sturtevants on Main Street in Ketchum is a great place for rentals, sales and they offer guided mountain bike rides.   If you want to check which trails are open, visit the Blaine County Recreation Districts Trails link.

4.   Retail Therapy! 🛍

Sometimes you need a break for the great outdoors!  If you like to shop, then you'll have fun checking out some of the big Memorial Day Weekend Sales!  First stop is The Brass Ranch at Sun Valley Resort.  This is a great time to get winter jackets on sale!  While you are there you can have lunch at The Konditerai which is a charming European style breakfast & lunch spot in Sun Valley that has long been a local's favorite.   Next stop while you are in the Sun Valley Village is Panache.  Known for luxurious cashmere, unique hard to find brands, this is a fun sale to check out too. Local shops like Silver Creek Outfitters, Sturtevants and Backwoods Mountain Sports also often have great sales this weekend.

5. Step Into the Danger Zone 🍿🎬✈️

Just kidding!  But the new Top Gun movie hits theaters this weekend and one of our favorite places is the quaint Magic Lantern Cinemas in downtown Ketchum, Idaho.  This theater is cash-only but serves great buttery popcorn and you can even get a glass of wine if you so choose while enjoying the latest flics!  Grab a quick dinner after an afternoon movie at The Limelight Hotel or Sushi on Second, both about a block away from the theater.

Whether you decide to BBQ, take the camper on it's maiden summer voyage,

or stay close to home, we hope you enjoy a fun and safe Memorial Day Weekend!

Cheers,

Martha & Katherine
